Gulls Window Circus returns to un-themed music following last week’s conclusion of the 24-week folk-like/folk-unlike series. Today is a non-rock show. I’ve taken the binary approach or rock/non-rock, so some of the artists here might be more of a grey area, appearing in both depending on the song (I’m thinking of Kalahari Surfers, Ultravox, Bene Gesserit, Fun Boy Three, Moonshake, OMD, and Bryan Ferry). In other areas, Dimitri From Paris brings my first exposure to Jamiroquai in his re-edit, Vibes4YourSoul re-edits Gal Costa, and Carol Douglas gives the first-wave disco treatment to Doors’ Light My Fire.

The twelfth and final week of the alphabetical Gulls Window Circus series folk-unlike covers the letters W-Z, with a respectable 7 entries for Z. The Edgar Winter track has been running through my head all week. Traffic’s flutist Chris Wood has a great track. If you don’t remember John Wonderling from his track in the folk-like series, here is another chance to hear him. There are 2 Stones artists in solo mode: Ron Wood and Bill Wyman. The label Big Potato records introduced me to Tucker Zimmerman – here is another track for you. If you are a Barbara Manning fan, World Of Pooh are here. If you love to dig deeper, Zenamon, ZSOU and ZuZu’s Petals are here. Sad to see the combined 24 weeks of folk-like and folk-unlike series come to an end, but here we are – hope you have enjoyed, and stick with the Circus as it moves on to other genres next week.

The eleventh week of the folk-unlike series on Gulls Window Circus covers the letters T-W. Three of my top artists ever (Television, Johnny Thunders, Tom Verlaine), the Modfather/Cappuccino Kid (Paul Weller), a Norwegian band that inspired Gull Boy (Mats Wawa), a band I used to write to about gigs in the Turkish Delight days (Travis Pickle), 2 artists I loved since their starting-off bands (Russ Tolman with Suspects/True West, and Jack Waterson with Green On Red) are here, plus post-Rain Parade band Viva Saturn and many others to love and learn, each with their own story.

The 10th week of the folk-unlike Gulls Window Circus series completes the letter ‘S’ and starts ‘T’. This week’s lesser-knowns (EVERY track chosen here is a 5 star affair) are Sopwith Camel, The Souls Of Inspyration, The Springfields, Terry Stamp, Joey Stec, Stumpwater, and Tall Bald Grandfathers. The A-list artists are The Smiths, Son Volt, Chris Stamey, Stephen Stills, Joe Strummer, Jim Sullivan, Matthew Sweet, The Teardrop Explodes, and Teenage Fanclub. The artists loved by many, but maybe sitting a little outside the typical public eye are Alexander Spence, American Spring, Kelley Stoltz, Bridget St. John, Dan Stuart, Subway Sect, Nikki Sudden, The Summer Hits, Sunflower Bean, Norma Tanega, and Team Dresch. Artists from the somewhat recent past you may have forgotten are: Spare Snare, Sniff ‘n’ the Tears, Rachel Sweet, and R. Dean Taylor.

Week 8 of folk-unlike on Gulls Window Circus covers the letters O-Q, with a side-stop on a missed L band starting off the show proper. This time the big names are The Only Ones, The Posies, Prefab Sprout, John Prine, Procol Harum, Suzi Quatro and Quicksilver Messenger Service, but you would be extremely short-changed if you didn’t immerse yourself in the lesser known artists, as those are the jewels the make this ring shine.

Week 7 of folk-unlike on Gulls Window Circus, the companion series to folk-like, minus the constraint of finding the folk styled track by the artist – same artists in the same alphabetical order. Big names such as Meat Puppets, Joni Mitchell, The Monochrome Set, Morrissey, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Leonard Nimoy, NRBQ, Tubeway Army and Laura Nyro, stand aside the jewels from deeper within (everything else I didn’t just mention, all just as strong as the big guys).
